On Problem Solving: Lessons From The Oyster …

We just wrapped up our 1/2 day conference titled … ‘Journey Through Grief’.  I had the honor to present some coping strategies for those who are grieving – and some tips for those who CARE about the bereaved — who want to be prepared to offer comfort and support.

It was a great experience … and I didn’t even cry on stage (which can easily happen when reminded of my dear one’s death – or speaking on this subject).  Whew!   With a variety of speakers, and multi-media presentations we were blessed to share lots of information and resources.

My presentation focused on the differences between Grief and Depression with coping strategies, and tips for supporting those who suffer. Connections are critical for support. To connect – we need communication – but it may be hard or painful.  I offered strategies on that important topic.

My session wrapped up with an appreciation for the Oyster – as a problem-solver.  Here’s why:

When the oyster is troubled by a painful irritant it secretes it’s own protective covering of Nacre – to coat the sharp cutting edges.  Over time, as these layers build up – a pearl is formed. The irritating, painful ‘thing’ becomes a thing of beauty.

We can’t avoid all painful events or irritants (any more than the oyster can). We will all experience loss, and we will all have loved ones, friends or associates who suffer loss.  It’s unavoidable … but the Oyster reminds us that we can cover that painful ‘thing’ – and we can do so with the beauty of faith, love, and prayers.

We can trust that our Creator doesn’t waste our pain … He really can make beauty from ashes. We can also learn very practical strategies that may help us through hard times.

I presented each attendee with a ‘Pearl’ reminder … and handouts with lots of information.  I have a few sets left … and will be happy to send them to the first 25 readers whose comment includes that request.  I will just need to know where to address the materials. In Scripture we read of a treasured ‘Pearl of Great Price’ … Many people don’t realize the treasures they have within, or that they themselves are. So here’s a reminder …

“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth”.  Deuteronomy 7:6 (NKJV)

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. (2 Corinthians 4:6-7)

We can find GREAT encouragement (in Verse 8 of that chapter)  as we ponder the Grace of God that can help us to say – with the Apostle … We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;”

You ARE treasured and loved passionately by the King of Heaven.  Keep holding on beloved … keep coating your irritants in the beauty of Love, Faith and Prayers … each fresh layer will build more treasure …

Blessings, Love and Laughter to you,

Margaret Lalich
